Emma's dark green leaves and red flowers make this canna perfect for the hot border in the garden.

Cannas should not be planted outside till the risk of frost has passed

From April, Garden-ready plants will be available at the nursery or shows. not mail order.

Cannas are brilliant for summer bedding in containers or flower beds. If in a container, it's best to move to a frost-free place for the winter. If planted in the ground, they might survive, but if you think your garden will get too cold and wet, you will need to lift them. If you don't have a garden, they also do well in a conservatory. Over a year, they can make quite big rhizomes, so if grown in pots, don't be surprised if you need a bigger pot the following year. It is always best to deadhead to encourage continued flowering, cut off old flower spikes down to the next side shoot to encourage a second spike to develop. If grown in a conservatory, don't let them get too hot or the foliage will burn.
