Lilium bakerianum var. Delavayi

Rare Species Lily from China. Not as difficult to grow as some Chinese species, providing it is given the correct conditions, like a well drained ericaceous compost with plenty of leaf mould, in Summer the compost should be kept moist, at all times, but in the Winter it must be almost dry. For this reason we always grow in pots, but if you have a really good, free draining, acidic soil in your garden the bulbs will be equally as happy planted in a border. Plants produce between 1 to 5 bell shaped flowers, which in daytime only have a slight perfume, come evening the perfume gets much more intense, this is most probably to attract night flying insects to pollinate the flowers. Very hardy, heights vary between 50 to 100 Cm's. Supplied as small purple coloured bulbs, which might take a year to get established before they flower.

Lilium duchartrei

The so called 'Marbled Martagon' that originates from the meadows of China. It's Small 5 cm flowers are lightly scented and vary from being heavily spotted with purple, to almost pure white. Unlike most Lilies this stunning species is 'stoloniferous', this means that the new shoots wander along in the soil before emerging, great care must be taken not to damage the young shoots when they appear in unexpected areas. Newly planted bulbs tend to grow about 50 Cm's tall, when established they can get to about 1 metre. Likes a well drained humus rich soil with plenty of leaf mould, in which it's stems can wander freely. Naturally grows from small pure white bulbs that are only between 2 to 4 Cm's in diameter.

Lilium majoense

Very beautiful species from China but we find it terribly difficult to keep alive, all too often the bulbs die after flowering, tall arching stems that can have as many as 7 sweetly scented flowers on them, each of which are about 12 Cm's in diameter, seems to grow best in a well drained acidic soil, flowers July onwards. Bulb size 10 cm + .

We currently have this species in tissue culture, virus free bulbs will hopefully be available in September 2014.
