Martagons

Autumn 2014

New season bulbs will be available to order from early  May onwards, shipping starts in mid September .

In 2014 Richard will be going to Canada in late August to harvest Martagon bulbs, he should arrive back in the U.K. by early September. Included in the consignment will be several new varieties, that are not yet listed. If you would like us to keep you updated, please contact us at info@hwhyde.co.uk and we will send you a newsletter.

This section contains a range of hybrids derived from L martagon. They grow well in wide range of soils from slightly acidic to alkaline, providing it is of good quality and well drained, like all Lilies they hate being water logged. A lot of customers grow them in light woodland, but they can also be grown in full Sun. All are hardy and scented, Bees and Butterflies love them. Further details can be found by selecting a variety.  Detailed cultural advice can be found on our Growing Tips. page.

Please note Martagon bulbs are only available in the Autumn.  More details and shipping rates can be found on our Ordering. page.

Amelita

A rare Heritage variety bred in 1982 by Fred Tarlton. Beautifully marked pink flowers, which are about 5 Cm's in diameter, set off well by the deep green foliage. Rated by Fred as the best pink he ever created. As with all martagons the bulbs can take a year or so to get established, but when they have martagons tend too be very long lived and increase well, needs a good humus rich alkaline soil, to do well, grows to about 1.2 metres when established and can have 20 or more flowers on a stem, which are produced from about mid June onwards.

Special price for 2013.

Brotsing

One of the best pure orange flowered martagons. A L.tsintauense x Brocade hybrid, Similar in habit to 'Tsing', but much harder to obtain. The Vivid flower colour comes from L.tsintauense, while it's ease of cultivation comes from Brocade. As with all martagons the bulbs can take a year or so to get established, but when they have martagons tend too be very long lived and increase well, needs a good humus rich alkaline soil, to do well, grows to about 90 cms when established and can have 15 or more flowers on a stem, which are produced from about mid June onwards.

Burnt Orange

During a visit to the, Devonian Botanical Garden in Alberta, we were lucky to see a large stand of 'Burnt Orange'. Sometimes when you see a Lily you think 'That I have got to get', 'Burnt Orange' is one of these. It is rarely offered for sale, hence we were very pleased to be able to obtain some bulbs this year. As with all martagons the bulbs can take a year or so to get established, but when they have martagons tend too be very long lived and increase well, needs a good humus rich alkaline soil, to do well, grows to about 1.4 metres when established and can have 30 or more flowers on a stem, which are produced from about mid June onwards.
